Also if you know that a magikarp will become a gyarados at a relatively low level you’re not on your first run of Pokémon, and hence the dude is not scamming you

Traded pokemon gain experience faster I believe and you can train it back in the veridian forest against kaukuna and metapod to level up and evolve. I always buy magikarp.

You pay 2,5 pokéballs for and early access to Gyarados. By using it agains every trainer you will have a Gyarados before Surge, maybe even Misty. But, it would be faster training time to catch one and use against after Surge trainers...

The one in the anime is a coniving connan however. Poor James was always getting suckered into buying one. Plus that Magikarp evolved and nearly killed Team Rocket, Ash, and Misty

I dont get it, he still scams you out of the 500. If you fish it up in vermillion for free, you still need to level it to 20. Thats your own ambition, the man doesnt help you with that at all. And any pokemon raised to level 20 before mt moon will crush eveything in their path, so its not like Gyrados is unique in that way. All the man teaches you is that spending money is a way to get something rather than spending time to find it yourself. Its up to you to decide which is more important.

I somehow didn't understand the pokemon catching tutorial and so Magikarp was my second ever Pokemon. With him and Bulby I made it all the way to the Seafoam Islands before my save got corrupted somehow.

I've always made that investment I knew even as a kid that there had to be something to magikarp and boy was i right when it evolved and started steam rolling everything with thrash

In gen 1 I ALWAYS buy the Magikarp. This lets me have a Gyarados earlier since I can switch train it all through Mt. Moon, and it lets me skip the Old Rod. No Old Rod gives me something way more valuable than P$500: an *item slot*. With 20 bag slots and 50 PC slots, item slots get pretty scarce later if you don't immediately use or sell one-per-save TMs and such. The Old Rod takes up a slot and cannot be rotten rid of once obtained, and it's pretty much useless once you have a Magikarp.
